Meet Breel Donald Embolo, Cameroonian born striker who scored against his country of birth in the world cup

Breel Donald Embolo is a Cameroonian born footballer who plays as a forward for French Ligue 1 side A.S Monaco. The 25-year-old footballer was born in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon on 14th February 1997 to Cameroonian parents Moise Kegni and Germaine Embolo.

 At the age of six, his mother Germaine moved to France to further her education which she later settled in Switzerland with her son. Embolo gained his Swiss citizenship on 12th December 2014 after moved to Basel. He started his youth career with Nordstern before he was transferred to F.C Basel’s youth team in 2010, which he won the Swiss championship tittle twice in that level.

Breel Embolo rose through the ranks at Basel and made his senior professional debut for the Swiss giants on 13th March 2014 in UEFA Europa league match against Red Bull Salzburg at the St. Jakob-park in Basel. Three days later, he made his Swiss super league debut by coming on as a substitute on the 85th against Aarau. He scored his first goal in the domestic league which was the final goal of the match.

On June 26,2016, German Bundesliga side Schalke 04 announced the signing of Breel Embolo from F.C Basel on a five-year deal for a reported fee of Twenty million euros (€20M) plus add-ons.  Embolo made an instant impact after joining Schalke which made him attract interest from other big teams in the German domestic league.

Embolo moved to fellow Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach on June 2018 for an undisclosed fee. On 27th October, 2021, Embolo scored twice in a massive 5-0 win over reigning German champions Bayern Munich, which was Bayern’s biggest ever defeat in the DFB POKAL and their first ever elimination to Monchengladbach.

On 15th July 2022, Breel Embolo joined French Ligue 1 side A.S Monaco on a four-year deal worth Twelve million euros (€12M). on the international front, Embolo made his debut for the Swiss national team on 31st March 2015 in a 1-1 draw friendly game against the United States in Zurich.

Several attempts were made by the Cameroonian football association and its authorities to convince Embolo to switch nationality, but all efforts proved futile. He made his dream world cup debut on 24th November, 2022 in Qatar against Cameroon which he netted the only goal of the match in the 48th minute, through an assist from Xherdan Shaqiri. This made him the first player in the history of the tournament to score a goal for his adopted nation against his nation of birth. Out of respect for his native nation, Embolo decided not to celebrate the goal in his quest to show respect and to his country of birth. This modest gesture has caught the attention of almost every football enthusiast around the world and it has become the talk of town. The head coach of Cameroon, Rigobert Song, in his post-match interview indicated that, they are hurt by Embolo’s goal but they admire his celebration.
